Physical therapy is a discipline in medicine that has existed in one form or another since ancient times. A physician by the name of Hippocrates is believed by historians to be one of the very first practitioners of physical therapy. He used techniques like massaging, hydrotherapy, and manual therapy to treat people as early as 460 BC. Physical therapy as both a discipline and science would continue to grow as more knowledge of the human physique was discovered. With the development of orthopedics, for instance, machines would be developed to help treat gout and other diseases by regularly exercising and moving joints.
Among the earliest documented use of physical therapy was recorded by a man named Per Henrik Ling, who would found the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics. The sole purpose of this institute was for people to exercise and move the body for health purposes. It wasn’t long after Ling’s center was established that other countries would jump on the physical therapy bandwagon.
What would be considered modern physical therapy was not established until the late 19th century. Physical therapy developed as a result of events that would necessitate rapid advancements in the field. It wasn’t long before countries were employing women trained in physical education to help disabled children with their physical disabilities. The Polio outbreak of 1916 only further necessitated the use of physical therapy and would help the field develop into the modern marvel that we know today.
